eword: As the founder and chief instructor of both organisations in New Zealand, Asai Sensei personally guided me on how to conduct each group (actually all of my students studied both JKS and IJKA karate... And yes, they are very different!). He expected the IJKA training to specifically focus on his unique bujutsu (martial arts technique) karate, regardless of "style". Essentially I.J.K.A is all about 'effective karate' as opposed to competition. This is why the IJKA members were always more exposed to Asai Sensei's kata. The JKS when founded was different, as it had 'broader targets', and was only for Shotokan. When Asai Sensei passed away, both JKS and IJKA had his full blessing. And he wanted both groups to continue forever. I really hope that his wishes are respected, and are positive that they will be.

Here is an explanation about J.K.S. and I.J.K.A. from Mr. Asai.
貴下益々御清祥の事とお喜び申し上げます。
私共は長年日本空手協会の団体名で活動を続けておりましたが、此の度新しい21世紀を迎えるにあたり、古い因習から脱却する為に去る
3月5日、全国役員会議を経て、人事を一新し、時代に即した技術集団としての活動を目指し、別紙の如く役員、総本部道場(65坪)、及び
総本部事務所と、そして岐阜県に於いて3,000坪を有する風光明媚なる地に、宿泊設備を完備した100坪の道場等を基盤として新たに
「武道社団 日本空手松涛会 J.K.S.｣を発足致しました。
We had continued our activities under the name of JAPAN KARATE ASSOCIATION up to this time. But on 5th March 2000, marking a new epoch, which is the new millennium, we held the National Directors Conference and dissolved the organization (JKA). And the new association "Budo Shadan Japan Karate Shotokai" was established so that we can manage the association with a new determination to respond to the requirements of the 21st Century.
Then on 2nd April, hundreds of officers gathered at the newly established dojo (0.05 acres). There was an opening ceremony for the new dojo and at the same time there was a demonstration and an entrance ceremony for J.K.S instructor trainees and students from abroad, who had previously passed the hard examination. The aim of the organization, from now on, is to achieve technical excellence, suitable for the 21st Century. As stated on another sheet, the new offices, Headquarters Dojo, Headquarters office were set up. Also the new training camp in Gifu Prefecture, with buffet, offices, instructors' dormitory, families' dormitory, 12 bathroom and 0.08 acres dojo, was established on 2.45 acres of land amid beautiful scenery.

●The I.J.K.A. does not regard styles as important,so all people in any styles who loves Karate can participate and investigate the
essence of Karate.
その技の基本を修練すればあらゆる流派の空手に通用し役立つものであります。
If you train and learn these basic techniques, then you will find that they are useful for all kinds of Karate styles.
その提唱する主な心条は、流派を問わずということ以外に、
The main principles of the I.J.K.A., other than disregarding style, are as follows;
●失われつつある空手道の武術性を復活すること
〇the revival of Karate as a martial arts (not only for sports, tournaments etc.).
●あらゆる武器に対する空手技をも身につける
〇acquire Karate techniques against any kinds of weapons.
●人々の幸せと健康を願い、技のみにかたよって身体を傷めることのない様、健康面の促進にも着眼する
〇for people's happiness and health, acquiring the method of techniques to prevent from damaging their body.
●空手を愛する人が年令に制限されることなく生涯続けられる空手道を強化する
〇Developing more methods to promote lifelong karate for all of people who love Karate without any restriction (age, M/F, etc.).
●体の強弱に適した技を普及する
〇Acquire techniques that don't only rely on physical strength.
という信条で活動する団体です。
J.K.S.とI.J.K.A.は目指す内容も、運営人員も異なる別個の団体ですが、携帯団体でありますので、希望者は、申請して、この二つの団体の
会員となり（入会費、J.K.S. ＄150、 I.J.K.A. $150）、双方の開催する行事に参加できます。
"I.J.K.A." and "J.K.S." have different aim, and are separate associations with different staffs. But they are cooperative so if you wish, you can apply for J.K.S. and I.J.K.A. (Fee for J.K.S.: $150, for I.J.K.A: $150) so you will be able to participate for both events. People who wish to make an application, please contact our office. We will give you more informations.
最も大事な事は、みにくい争いを引き起こす派閥を失くし、空手道を真に理解する人々が、和気藹々と一堂に会して、楽しく空手道を修練
すること、これは世界中の空手を学ぶ人々が望んでいることであり、ひいてはそれが世界平和を願う心に繋がると信じています。
Most important thing is to eliminate factionalism which ind istinctly occurred, and I believe people who really understand Karate Do gather and train together happily is what all people are hoping and also this will be connected to the spirit of world peace and hope.
