South African Renshusei 2025 (PART ONE): Jody Young & Wesley Dyssel

Jody Young Sensei (5th Dan) and Wesley Dyssel Sensei (4th Dan) came as IKS 練習生 (RENSHUSEI) here in Oita.

Jody flew in from Canada and Wesley from South Africa.

To summarize, Jody began his training on March 25th and Wesley joined him from April 3rd. Their training concluded on April 8th.

To summarize the training, the unpinning theme was the heart of the 国際空手道松濤館  (IKS — International Karate Shotokan); that is, “Karate as 武道 (BUDO) / 武術 (BUJUTSU)”.

This aim includes the practice of firstly, pre-WW2 karate; secondly, the developments made during the Golden Era of Shotokan (spearheaded by Nakayama Sensei; and thirdly, the revolutionary ‘natural karate’ and advanced additions propagated by my late mentor, 浅井哲彦先生 (Asai Tetsuhiko Sensei); moreover, and fourthly, the ‘IKS WAY’, which is for each instructor to develop the ‘best karate for themselves’. In this way, each individual can maximize themselves 'the traditional way', based on proper BUSHIDO.

Needless to say,  道 (path/way) actually returns karate to its original Budo/Bujutsu specifications.

Of course, training always includes the standard 基本 (Kihon), 型 (Kata) and 組手(Kumite). But also, the advanced Kihon and principles, 古典型 (Kotengata, old/classical forms). Furthermore, 分解 (Bunkai, ‘analysis’) for precise technical actions, and the real world/practical 応用 (Oyo, ‘applications’).

I’d like to thank both Jody and Wesley for their efforts in the Dojo. A wonderful time with two great guys. Importantly, I’d also like to congratulate Jody Sensei on passing his IKS Rokudan here in Japan on April 4th.

Away from training it was also really fun to spend time together with Jody and Wesley. Until next time!!
